Oxford Planters’ large wooden planters are individually made to order in our Cotswolds workshop, combining traditional joinery with considered engineering for substantial outdoor planting.
A large planter is not simply a smaller design made bigger. Scale, proportion, intended planting and anticipated internal load inform the engineering of every piece.
Our planters are designed for direct planting, without relying upon a secondary planting container for their structural integrity. This specialist approach has been developed and refined over more than two decades.

We consider the dimensions of each planter in relation to the intended planting, its position and the surrounding landscape, balancing the requirements of the plant with the proportion and scale of the setting.

Since 2008, we have protected the internal walls with our specialist, environmentally considered coating system, allowing maximum internal space for soil, roots and established planting while protecting the timber beneath.
Which timber is best for a large outdoor planter?
We offer Oak, Iroko and A1 Grade Accoya™. Oak is particularly suited to traditional and heritage settings, Iroko works well in both natural and contemporary schemes, while Accoya™ is our preferred timber for painted planters.
