The Churchill

The Versailles Churchill Planter is one of the defining designs from our atelier.

Its proportions trace their heritage to the historic caisse de Versailles, first developed in seventeenth-century France by André Le Nôtre for King Louis XIV. These planters housed delicate citrus trees and combined cast-iron frames with removable oak panels, allowing gardeners to lift the planted liner and move the trees indoors during winter.

The Versailles Churchill is not a reproduction of that historic design. Instead, we have interpreted its architectural presence and practical ingenuity through the disciplines of fine cabinet making and architectural joinery.

An Interpretation of the Versailles Planter

We make every Churchill entirely from solid Accoya®, to order, in our Cotswolds workshop. Traditional joinery gives the structure its strength, while individually shaped steel braces and hand-turned finials echo the character of the original Versailles planter. We proportion each commission to its setting, so no two Churchill planters are identical.

However, the Churchill introduces an important practical difference. We designed it for direct planting rather than a secondary liner. Four removable timber panels provide straightforward access to the root system for inspection and long-term maintenance, while allowing the tree to establish naturally within the planter.

Furthermore, should seasonal protection ever be required, the entire planter can move indoors with the tree securely established within it.

Made for Longevity

Beyond its architectural presence, the Churchill accommodates the natural movement of timber, soil pressure and root growth. As a result, it maintains its structural integrity while allowing the planting to develop naturally over time.

The result is a planter that draws from the ingenuity of the historic Versailles caisse, yet belongs entirely to our own atelier, considered for the landscape, made for the planting and intended to endure.
