Bespoke Garden Furniture Commissions

Individual Garden Furniture

Our bespoke garden furniture commissions are made specifically for their setting, whether for a private garden, country estate, hotel, historic property or professionally designed landscape.

Drawing on traditional cabinet making and architectural joinery, we work from our own designs or respond to an entirely individual brief. Proportion, dimensions, timber, joinery and detailing are considered in relation to the architecture, landscape and intended use, rather than adapted from a standard piece.

Commissions range from individual garden benches and substantial dining tables to seating designed around a particular landscape or architectural setting.

Garden Furniture for the National Trust

Our long-standing relationship with the National Trust has led to numerous bespoke bench commissions, each responding to the individual character, architecture and practical requirements of its property and landscape.

These include the Polesden Bench, originally designed and made for Polesden Lacey; bespoke seating for Dyffryn Gardens; and the Blickling Bench, made for the Blickling Estate. Each commission calls for a different approach to proportion, detailing and setting, while retaining the traditional joinery and cabinet-making principles that run throughout our work.

A Bespoke Commission at Thiepval, France

Commissioned as part of a commemorative garden designed by Fisher Tomlin & Bowyer, this extraordinary 100ft-long continuous seat was made specifically for its woodland setting by Oxford Planters for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site at Thiepval, France.

Created to mark the centenary of the First World War Armistice, the garden opened on 6 November 2018 and sits within woodland beside the Thiepval Memorial.

Before work began, we travelled to France to survey and template the site, allowing the seat to follow the natural form of the woodland, wrapping around and engaging with the existing trees.

The ground presented a particular challenge. Due to contamination, the legs could not be dug into or fixed below ground. Each therefore had to be considered in relation to the changing levels across the site. Once the seat was in position, every leg was cut and levelled on site over two days to achieve the correct relationship with the surrounding ground.

Made principally in Accoya™, the seat also incorporates Welsh Oak and Portland stone detailing spelling out ‘1918’, bringing material and meaning together within the landscape.

At 100ft long, its scale, curvature, changing ground levels and relationship with the existing woodland required an entirely bespoke approach, from the initial site survey and templating through to the final fitting in France
