This timeless classic is made traditionally with mortice and tenon joints fixed in place with handmade wooden dowels. Oak | Iroko | Accoya
The Classic Hertford™ wooden planter is one of Oxford Planters’ defining designs and one of our longest-established. Its balanced proportions and restrained detailing have made it a favourite with private clients, professional gardeners and landscape designers. The design has also found a place at Hampton Court Palace.
Over the years, the Hertford has become a recognised form in its own right. However, its apparent simplicity belies the engineering behind it. A substantial wooden planter must withstand the continual pressures of soil, planting, water and outdoor exposure. For that reason, we developed the Hertford with those demands firmly in mind.
We make each Hertford™ individually in our Cotswolds workshop, where our joiners build the structure around its intended scale and setting. We select oak, iroko or Accoya® according to the character and finish required. Oak and iroko will weather naturally to a refined silver patina, while Accoya® offers a particularly stable surface for a professionally applied finish in your chosen colour.
The Classic Hertford wooden planter works equally well as a single architectural feature, in symmetrical pairs or as part of a considered sequence along a terrace or garden elevation. Substantial 70 x 70mm or 90 x 90mm legs, depending on scale, give the design its distinctive presence. Meanwhile, matching rails maintain its balanced proportions, while a concealed slatted base allows irrigation to remain discreetly integrated.
The Hertford™ is chosen by those who understand that a well-made planter is an architectural object in its own right. Although many have reproduced its familiar outline, the original remains defined by the experience behind the design and the confidence that comes from getting the fundamentals right.
Ultimately, every Hertford™ is made to order and scaled to its dimensions, planting and setting. The character of the original remains, while each piece becomes entirely its own.
