About This Project

Vermiculated rustication:

In architecture, rustication is a masonry technique most famous for its use during 16th-century Italian Renaissance (notably in examples like Palazzo Caprini, Rome and Palazzo Te, Mantua), where roughly-cut stones contrast with smooth, squared-block masonry, creating contrasts and textures in the surface. Among the different types of rustication, one of the most interesting is the so-called “vermiculation” variant. From the Latin vermiculus or ‘little worm’ dense worm-like patterns are used to subtly carve the surface of the stone.

Oxford Planters was commissioned to design the planters for a London property using the vermicular rustication as inspiration. Once a copy of the pattern was made the design was hand drawn onto the face of multiple planters. Each pattern was made free-hand using a hand held router. Although extremely labour intensive the end result was exactly as desired.

These 1.5×1.5×0.5mH vermicular planters were made in A1 grade Accoya and hand painted white to match the building. You can commission us to make you the finest quality planters from the best hand selected hardwood and Accoya timber.
